"S.H.I.E.L.D. is people, people willing to give their lives for something greater than themselves, to save the world from men like you."
Nick Fury to Hank Pym[src]

The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, better known by its acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., is an American extra-governmental counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, tasked with maintaining both national and global security.

History[]

Janet van Dyne[]

Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., but van Dyne seemingly died while on a mission.[1]

Captain Marvel[]

Captain Marvel went back to Earth, where she interacted with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury. Captain Marvel gave Fury a pager to use to contact her in the event of an emergency. Fury carried the pager with him.[1]

Hope van Dyne[]

Pym and van Dyne's daughter, Hope van Dyne, was recruited to join S.H.I.E.L.D. by Nick Fury. van Dyne joined the organization hoping to be like her mother, against Pym's wishes. Fury sent van Dyne on a mission in Odesa, during which she was killed.[1]

Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff watch as Tony Stark is killed

Nick Fury began putting together a list of remarkable individuals known as the Avengers Initiative, for which Fury and Natasha Romanoff wanted to recruit Tony Stark. Fury and Romanoff confronted Stark at Randy's Donuts in order to attempt to discuss the initiative and his worsening health condition. At Fury's orders, Romanoff attempted to inject Stark with lithium dioxide, which was meant to slow the worsening of his condition. However, Stark began convulsing and passed out on the floor, dead.

Meanwhile, Phil Coulson arrived in New Mexico and discovered a hammer on the ground. Coulson contacted Fury about the hammer while Romanoff was arrested for Stark's murder. Fury confronted Romanoff, revealing that he was aware that she was innocent and that he believed that somebody had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., handing her the Lithium Dioxide syringe. Romanoff was taken onto a STRIKE transport vehicle, but she escaped custody and began investigating Stark's murder.[1]

Assassination of Thor[]

Nick Fury and Phil Coulson discuss the recent murders

By nightfall, S.H.I.E.L.D. had assembled a base to investigate the hammer's appearance. The base was infiltrated by Thor, who was attempting to retrieve his hammer. Nick Fury witnessed Thor approach the hammer and told Clint Barton not to fire at him yet, but Barton's grip slipped and released the arrow, which stabbed Thor in the chest, killing him. Barton was arrested, and Fury found it odd that two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had betrayed the organization in two days. Fury attempted to talk to Barton, but found that he had been killed as well. Fury and Phil Coulson studied Barton and Thor's bodies, and Fury shared his suspicion that Barton's and Tony Stark's deaths were linked.[1]

The next day, Natasha Romanoff visited Culver University, where she confronted Betty Ross. Ross hesitantly agreed to study the lithium dioxide syringe and found that the antidote never entered Tony Stark's system and that the syringe itself had been broken. Nick Fury contacted Romanoff about Clint Barton's death, upsetting her. Fury revealed that Barton and Tony Stark were both on the Avengers Initiative, and that the only remaining candidates were Bruce Banner and herself. Romanoff found Banner hiding at the school and attempted to get away when they were confronted by Thaddeus Ross. A projectile hit Banner, who confronted the military, prompting Hulk to attack them. However, Hulk suddenly exploded, horrifying Betty.[1]

Nick Fury confronts Loki

At the same time, Loki came to Earth and was met by S.H.I.E.L.D., to whom Loki declared his intention to seek revenge for Thor's death. Loki attacked S.H.I.E.L.D. with the Casket of Ancient Winters, but Nick Fury and Sif convinced Loki to give Fury until dawn to figure out who killed Thor. Natasha Romanoff later figured out who the killer was and attempted to call Fury, but was killed and could only deliver a cryptic message about the answer being "hope."

Nick Fury considers calling Captain Marvel

Fury and Phil Coulson sat in a diner, and Coulson reminded Fury that he was as much a part of the Avengers Initiative as any of the candidates, prompting Fury to consider using a pager to contact Captain Marvel. However, he realized the meaning of Romanoff's message and drove to meet with Loki so that they could apprehend the killer together. Fury and Loki went to Hope van Dyne's grave, where they confronted the killer, Hank Pym.
