Oliver was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that joined the remains of the agency led by Robert Gonzales following HYDRA's attack on S.H.I.E.L.D.. When another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. led by Phil Coulson emerged, Oliver supported the attack on it. After the reunification of S.H.I.E.L.D., he became one of Director Coulson's advisers. He was killed when the Inhumans led by Jiaying attacked and captured the Iliad.
Biography[]
Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
Robert Gonzales' S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
Oliver was recruited to join a new branch of S.H.I.E.L.D. lead by Robert Gonzales after the HYDRA Uprising. He accepted the offer and became one of its highest ranking agents.[1]
Questioning Lance Hunter[]
Oliver was present when agents Alphonso Mackenzie and Bobbi Morse returned from their undercover mission inside Phil Coulson's rival S.H.I.E.L.D., now with Lance Hunter, who had discovered their plans. Hunter was questioned by Gonzales, who explained why this S.H.I.E.L.D. had been built.
Eventually Hunter escaped the base, with little resistance from Morse; the council was called for a meeting to discuss what their next step should be. It was decided that Morse and Mackenzie would return to Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. and take it over.[1]
Attack on the Playground[]
While Robert Gonzales and his team took over Phil Coulson's base at the Playground, Oliver remained at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Aircraft Carrier, he was contacted by Anne Weaver who updated him on their status.[2]
Voting on the HYDRA Attack[]
When Phil Coulson surrendered himself over to S.H.I.E.L.D., he informed them that he had discovered the location of a HYDRA Base where enhanced humans were being experimented on and he needed Robert Gonzales help to save them and destroy the base. Agent Oliver was called in to join the vote for the next action. After hearing the plan, Oliver and Anne Weaver voted against moving forward as they felt the mission was too dangerous; however Gonzales, Melinda May and Bobbi Morse all voted to move forward with the mission. In the end, the mission was a success and the facility was destroyed after Coulson had rescued the prisoners.[3]
The Inhuman Threat[]
- "They could teleport into this room right now and leave a bomb behind."
- ―Oliver[src]
Robert Gonzales called for a meeting with Phil Coulson, Oliver, Anne Weaver, Melinda May and Bobbi Morse; Coulson revealed that Theta Protocol was the hiding of the Helicarrier for a world-threatening event. Coulson proposed that the two S.H.I.E.L.D. organizations merge to form one S.H.I.E.L.D. with Coulson as director and Gonzales and his council as his advisers. Gonzales agreed to the idea as he felt an incoming war could threaten the world.
When two Inhumans were caught teleporting onto the Iliad and attempting to steal the Monolith aboard, Oliver was called for a meeting with the other leaders of S.H.I.E.L.D. to discuss the recent events, Weaver informed them of the Stone's power and its worth to HYDRA and other dangerous organizations. Afterwards, Weaver used HYDRA technology to track the teleporter's location. When Morse arrived to informed them that the Monolith was safely guarded by a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Oliver, Weaver and Gonzales informed her that they were successfully found the Inhumans' home and were planning on visiting.
Back at the Playground, Coulson and the S.H.I.E.L.D. council discussed their plan of attack, although Coulson was against the idea of attacking, both Oliver and Weaver argued that their recent run-ins with the Inhumans proved that they were too dangerous not to be considered a threat. Coulson argued that the last thing they needed was to start another war and instead suggested that they organize a sit-down with the Inhumans' leader Jiaying, using Skye as a go between and resolve the conflict peacefully.
Director Coulson briefed the team, including Oliver, on the mission plan, putting himself in the position to be the one to meet with Jiaying; Robert Gonzales however argued that Coulson should not be the one to go on the mission as he had too close a personal connection to Skye which would hinder his judgement. Although Coulson argued that he was planning on using that personal connection to get through the mission peacefully, Gonzales argued that the threat was too great and he was not objective when Skye was involved. The rest of the council sided with Gonzales and it was decided he should go in Coulson's place.[4]
Inhumans Attack[]
- "Beaches and desert. You'll get bored."
"Truthfully, bored would be a nice change of pace."
"So there's nothing I can say?"
"To change my mind? No. I just need some time to figure out my next move." - ―Oliver and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Back on the Iliad, Oliver spoke to Alphonso Mackenzie, who had decided to leave S.H.I.E.L.D. as he did not wish to work for the organization under Phil Coulson's leadership. They discussed Mackenzie's plans after leaving and he explained he planned to take a motorcycling holiday with his brother. Oliver attempted to convince him to stay but Mackenzie insisted that nothing would change his mind. As they were talking the alarms in the base were set off and they were informed by Agent Harris that Robert Gonzales had been killed during the peace negotiations.
Oliver joined Anne Weaver to discuss their next move with Coulson, while Weaver and Oliver insisted that they should prepare to attack the Inhumans, Coulson refused, as he would not risk the lives of innocent people including Agent Skye. Oliver argued that if Skye joined the Inhumans she could give them information on all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s weaknesses. Mackenzie arrived and claimed that although he wished to leave S.H.I.E.L.D., now Gonzales was dead he needed to see the matter finished, but he agreed with Coulson that they should not attack. Coulson requested a few hours to gain information from Calvin Zabo, and Weaver gave him three while Oliver began searching for answers.
The Iliad was attacked by a team of Inhumans led by Gordon working under the order of Jiaying, who managed to take over the majority of the ship within minutes. Oliver joined Anne Weaver in the control room to discuss a plan to save the ship. Weaver ordered Coulson to be contacted as soon as possible before desperately asking Oliver if there was anyone left fighting for them on the ship. Although Weaver managed to contact Coulson's base, the base was under attack from Zabo, who stopped Coulson from communicating.[5]
Hijacking of the Iliad[]
Shortly afterwards, the Inhumans took control of the entire ship, taking Oliver, Anne Weaver and all the other surviving S.H.I.E.L.D. agents onboard hostage. Jiaying and Gordon overlooked the hostages and prepared for the next stage in their plan.[5] When an emergency beacon was sent from the ship, Jiaying asked Weaver and Oliver what the code was to disable the message; Weaver bravely refused and advised that Jiaying and her army surrender. To their surprise, however, Jiaying ordered them to expand the beacon to every other S.H.I.E.L.D. base.
When Oliver refused to assist her in her deadly crusade against S.H.I.E.L.D., Jiaying had him and two other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents locked in a small room before dropping one of her Terrigen Crystals inside with them. When the crystal smashed, it unleashed a deadly Terrigen Mist which engulfed the agents. Within seconds, Oliver and the other agents had died and their bodies had turned completely to stone as Anne Weaver watched helplessly.[6]
Personality[]
Oliver was a quieter member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and was loyal to it and his leaders, Robert Gonzalos and later Phil Coulson. Even in the face of potential death, he remained loyal to S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson, though this ultimately led to his death. He cared about Alphonso Mackenzie and talked to him prior to Mackenzie's short lived leave of absence to try to convince him to join back.
