Hasan (Urdu: حسن) was the husband of Aisha and the father of Sana Ali.
Biography[]
Partition of India[]
Hasan lived as a rose farmer in British-occupied India, in a village where he promoted unity between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, whom he believed should band together against the British in a peaceful protest. He sometimes delivered passionate speeches to his fellow villagers, although his gatherings would end up being dispersed by the British Armed Forces.[1][2]
While walking though his fields of roses, Hasan once found a young woman sleeping on the ground. Although she initially acted defensively towards him, Hasan offered her shelter at his house, but she declined. Later that night, Hasan was visited by the woman, to whom he gave some food. Hasan inquired about her name and origin, and as they discussed his roses, she finally opened up to him and told Hasan her name: Aisha. Hasan and Aisha eventually fell in love, married and had a daughter they named Sana.
For several years, Hasan lived a happy life with his wife and daughter. However, he grew worried as turmoil erupted in India due to the events that would lead to the Partition of India. One night, they were visited by fellow villager Rohan, who offered his family milk and vegetables, but Hasan was outraged by this, as he felt as he no longer had the right to live a peaceful life since he was a Muslim in a mainly Hindu land. Later, Hasan was told by Aisha that they should leave India, although Hasan was reluctant to leave his house behind.
Knowing that his wife was actually fleeing from something else, although he did not say anything about it at the time, Hasan agreed to follow her, causing the family to get onto the road in an attempt to reach the newly created country of Pakistan. Due to his walking problem, Hasan had trouble keeping up with his wife and demanded to know what she was actually running from, leading Aisha to show him her bangle. Although his wife was worried, Hasan promised Aisha that their family would be all right.
Hasan and his family arrived at the train station, trying to board the last train for Pakistan. Among the dense crowd, Hasan was instructed by Aisha to take Sana with him and board the train while she chose to remain behind. Hasan thus did his best to make his way to the train, holding hands with Sana. However, as he inspected the train looking for some space, Hasan realized that he had lost Sana and began screaming her name throughout the station.
Doing his best to go in the opposite direction than the rest of the crowd, Hasan helplessly looked for his daughter, asking other people whether they had seen her, but to no avail. It was not until a trail of luminous stars appeared, which had been manifested by a time-travelling Kamala Khan, Hasan's great-granddaughter, that Hasan was able to be reunited with his daughter. Hasan was thus able to get into the train with Sana, although he had to make the hard choice of leaving Aisha behind, unaware that she had already been killed by Najma.[1]
Raising Sana[]
- "A Djinn? Of course. At least, that is what my father told me."
- ―Sana Ali to Kamala Khan[src]
Thanks to the intervention of Kamala Khan and the sacrifice of Aisha, Hasan was able to safely reach Pakistan, where he could raise his daughter Sana. Hasan would then tell his daughter stories about Aisha, even disclosing the fact that she was not really human, calling her a Djinn, and recounting the time that they lost each other and were reunited at the train station. Hasan would also give his daughter a picture of herself and her parents by the time she was still a baby.[3]
Personality[]
Hasan was a gentle and warm individual, with a high sense of hospitality and altruism. Upon stumbling on the sleeping Aisha in his field of roses, he immediately noticed that she seemed in need of assistance and offered her shelter and food. His kindness and sensitivity, as well as his love for poetry, were later able to bring Aisha to open up to him, leading to a happy love story between the two of them. Hasan had a deep love for his wife and daughter, and despite the fact he was well aware that Aisha was running from something, he respected her secrets and never wanted to know more about it until the very end, when he felt that he had to know in order to protect his family.
Hasan could also be passionate when it came to political matters. He was a strong advocate of the unity between Indian people against the British Armed Forces, and insisted that the different religious communities should find a way to live together in peace. As such, he grew frustrated upon suffering from discrimination because a was a Muslim, even being ashamed that other people of his own village would show him charity.
