Weregild refers to the amount of money someone is worth to their tribe or town. If killed in combat, their family would be entitled to reparations from the slayer according to the value of the weregild.
Significance[]
At the start of the Third Age, Isildur claimed the One Ring as a weregild for his father's and brother's death, despite all counsel from the wise to destroy it.[1]
In TA 2885 the twin sons of King Folcwine of Rohan, Folcred and Fastred were killed fighting the Haradrim at the Battle of the Crossings of Poros. The Steward of Gondor, Túrin II sent a rich weregild of gold to Folcwine in recompense for his loss.
