• At a meeting of the White Council, Gandalf urges an attack on Dol Guldur but Saruman, ever eager to possess the One Ring, overrules him and no attack is attempted. Saruman also begins to search the Gladden Fields himself for the One Ring.
• Walda, the twelfth King of Rohan, is killed by an Orc, his son Folca succeeds him
• Halfred Greenhand is born
