Nimbrethil was a birch-tree forest situated in the land of Arvernien in the south of Beleriand during the First Age.[1]
According to The Atlas of Middle-earth, Nimbrethil was about forty miles from east to west.[2]
History[]
Nimbrethil's birches were used by Eärendil to build his well-known ship Vingilot. Though Nimbrethil was lost along with the rest of Beleriand at the end of the First Age,[3] it was recalled by Bilbo Baggins in the year TA 3019, when he recited The Short Lay of Eärendel: Eärendillinwë in Rivendell.[4]
Etymology[]
Nimbrethil is a Sindarin name meaning "white [or silver] birches."[5]
