The Master Stone of Osgiliath, or the Stone of Osgiliath, was the greatest of the seven palantíri (Seeing-stones) of Middle-earth, and was located within Osgiliath, the ancient capital of Gondor. For 1,500 years or more, it was held beneath the Dome of Stars that gave the city its name. Unlike some of the other palantíri, the Master Stone of Osgiliath was too hefty to be picked up by any one person.[1]
This Stone was also the first to be lost. Early in the reign of Eldacar, the Kin-strife arose, a civil war in which the city of Osgiliath was besieged and burned by rebels in TA 1437. In this event, the Stone was lost in the waters of the river Anduin that ran through the city.[1]
