Ethring was a bridge and possibly a town[1] built over the river Ringló. It was a major crossing point over that river, and the only recorded bridge in Imlad-Ringló. The South Road that led from Morthond Vale to Pelargir ran through it.[2]
During the War of the Ring, Aragorn II crossed the river Ringló at Ethring with his Dead Men of Dunharrow.[3]
Etymology[]
Ethring is a Sindarin word possibly meaning "across cold", likely containing the element ring ("cold, chill")[4] and eth-, a possible mutated form[5] of the prefix ath- ("on both sides, across")[6].[7]
