The Dark Door as depicted in Peter Jackson's The Return of the King

The Dark Door, also known as the Gate of the Dead Men,[1] was the northern entrance to the Paths of the Dead. It was located at the end of the Dimholt, a dark forest near Dunharrow, on one side of the mountain Dwimorberg.

History[]

Baldor and his father Brego, King of Rohan, once discovered this door when scouting the dales of the White Mountains in the early years of Rohan. They were denied passage by a mysterious man who sat outside and died at that very hour. Driven by curiosity, Baldor rashly vowed to pass the door at the completion feast of Meduseld and did so a year later in TA 2570. He met his demise within.[2]

The remains of Baldor were found in the year TA 3019, when Aragorn and the Grey Company entered the door in order to rouse the Dead Men of Dunharrow.[3]
