Cirith Gorgor was the point where the mountain ranges of the Ered Lithui and the Ephel Dúath met, located towards the northwest of Mordor.
It was sealed by the Black Gate and guarded by the two Towers of the Teeth, Carchost and Narchost.[1]
History[]
The Black Gate was built by Sauron during the Second Age with the power of the One Ring to seal the pass. After his defeat, Cirith Gorgor was part of a series of fortifications and towers that Gondor had placed in the mountains, high points and passes, to ensure that Mordor remained desolate and uninhabited. However, Gondor fell into decline and was struck by civil war and plague, and so afterwards Cirith Gorgor was slowly retaken by Sauron and his other dark minions.
At Cirith Gorgor, Aragorn and the armies of Gondor and Rohan met with the army of Mordor in a battle just before the One Ring was destroyed. A great many lost their lives, but in the end held Sauron's gaze long enough to allow Frodo Baggins to destroy the Ring.
Cirith Gorgor was ruined by the devastation of the northwestern part of Mordor after the destruction of the Ring.[2]
Etymology[]
Cirith Gorgor is Sindarin for 'Haunted Pass'.[2]
