Artamir was the first son of King Ondoher of Gondor.
Biography[]
Artamir was the eldest son of King Ondoher, and brother of Faramir and Fíriel.
During his father's reign a great tragedy stuck: the invasion of Wainriders from the east in TA 1944, who had formed an alliance with the Haradrim of the south. Thus Gondor was attacked from two fronts. Artamir and Ondoher led an army to Ithilien, preparing for the assault from the north. However, the Wainriders unexpectedly descended on them from the east instead. This resulted in a utter defeat for Gondor, and Artamir, his father and brother all perished. The invasion almost destroyed Gondor, but the general, Eärnil, who had defeated the Haradrim on the southern front, made his way north to where the Wainriders were celebrating their victory. He surprised their camp and destroyed them. Though victorious, Gondor was severely weakened and with the death of the King and both his sons there was a succession crisis. Arvedui of Arthedain and General Eärnil (a descendant of Anárion) both claimed the throne, which after a year was awarded by the Council of Gondor to Eärnil.[2]
Etymology[]
The name Artamir comes from Quenya and means "noble jewel". It is made from the words arta, meaning "exalted" or "noble", and mírë, meaning "treasure" or "jewel".[3]
