CGI chimpanzee Robbie Williams, silly as it may seem, is THE innovation that the staid music biopic genre has so desperately needed. Films about famous people are often judged on their ability to properly evoke our memory of icons. “Does Marisa Abela look enough like Amy Winehouse?” “Will Timothee Chalamet’s voice sound like Bob Dylan’s?” “Can Jeremy Allen White wear a jean jacket as convincingly as Bruce Springsteen?” In Better Man, filmmaker Michael Gracey throws a middle finger in the…

A riveting social issues drama that slowly turns into a domestic suspense thriller before becoming perhaps a bit too Scooby Doo. Its depiction of the generational divide for how news is consumed as well as how that impacts one’s worldview is probably the closest a film has come to reminding me of the way the Black Lives Matter movement was received in America.

First 45 minutes are about as locked in as I’ve been on a film all year, which is no surprise from the director of Blue Ruin, a movie that also plants you on the edge of your seat from the opening frame. The rest of the movie is strong, too, but never quite matches the urgency of its introduction.

A movie about depression, dull offices, and dreading small talk so much that you’d rather die. Really smartly depicts introversion as the struggle to participate, rather than an unwillingness. It’s full of evocative imagery that speaks more clearly and effectively than words tend to on this subject. Her sadness serves to underscore the comedic mundanity around her and the characters feel true. Really effective, felt it deeply, the feature is an improvement to as well an expansion on the short.
