What a risky endeavor! I can see why this alienated many and it certainly has its silly moments, but I was mostly captivated by this bizarre tale of grief and loss. Julia Louis-Dreyfus blew me away. She goes through every stage of grief and you can feel it all. It takes awhile to get past the bird (🖕) of it all and I think it's a credit to Arinzé Kene's voice acting that this didn't veer into laughable territory. Unfortunately, I read the "Anna Faris in The House Bunny" comment and spent most of the runtime trying to eject that from my brain (nearly impossible). Still, Daina Oniunas-Pusić used her feature debut to swing for the fences and I think this story is so twisted it actually works. I found myself normalizing all of it and channeling my own grief, which is really the best you can get out of art. On the sillier side, Death as a macaw that raps and dances and smokes weed really aligns with how I think the process should be.
