Disregard most things before July of 2019. Know very little…I’ve just probably watched it.

The Glass Menagerie 1987
Newman’s camera lurks in the shadows, capturing what is there, what is expressed, as well as measuring every absence. Never sure if the camera is trying to see more or to get away.
The apartment is a tomb, every body is a cage and we are all liable to break easy.
Newman was a really good actor, a fantastic movie star, but is a legendarily skilled director. Now having seen most of his oeuvre it is more than evident that he understood mise-en-scène better than most filmmakers of his generation. With Glass Menagerie he places Williams on screen somewhere between Oliveira and Resnais.

PTU 2003
I don’t know that anyone has filmed city streets as magnificently as To has in the 21st Century, an ever winding, tightening and expanding networks of streets and alleyways for thugs and state-sponsored thugs to do their death dance. To’s blocking is most like ballet, it’s mesmerizing. Noticed how his camera makes a point to catch every sign, poster and ad, because in this world everything is for sale, anything can be traded, people are commodities and this corruption carries…

The Bridges of Madison County 1995
About sacrifice, like the best Eastwood’s. Streep channeling a little Magnani. I don’t know that I’ve ever enjoyed her more. Eastwood tackles sentimentalism earnestly and naturally, with a respect for romanticism that benefits the intimate human drama immensely. Eastwood’s command of space here is tops of his career. Brief Encounters for the 90s. The best rewatch I had in 2024.

On Tour 2010
Amalric riffing on …All the Marbles. I love Amalric on screen and he is a decent director, but he is no Peter Falk nor is he Bob Aldrich. On Tour plays best when it isn’t pressing and just hanging out. A little sad, but also very funny. The non-professional acting works in its favor. Amalric does tired, can’t-get-his-shit-together, shitty-but-charming dude like no one else. The problem with shaggy dog movies is it seems to create a constant internal battle within…

As I Was Moving Ahead, Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty 2000
I've never felt like crying for nearly five hours straight, but I have now. Not crying because I was sad, or crying because I was happy, just a swell of emotions all at once constantly ebbing and flowing, arising for no particular reason, just because. Images, sound, light, darkness, a Bolex and a life lived, a life loved, a life remembered and spliced together at the end of the century.
