The Record

The Record

There’s really something super special about Korean horror movies from the 90s and 2000s, and The Record is no exception. Korean horror is typically very slow-paced, but The Record starts off with a breakneck pace and keeps it that way the whole way through, this didn’t feel like an hour and a half at all. The plot may basically just be a slightly altered version I Know What You Did Last Summer with a few traits taken from Scream, but hey i’ll take it because i loved that movie too.

My only real gripe is the kills really leave a lot to be desired, which is kind of a sin when it comes to slashers. They’re not horribly done though and some of which are just as brutal as they should be. Make no mistake, this is a slasher, through and through. There’s no metaphoric slowburn that’s otherwise prevalent in Korean horror movies from the 90s to today, but The Record was not made with that intention so that’s not a bad or good thing.

So many beautiful shots too, especially the scenes in the sauna, and the school after-hours. The really worn, dated analog look of the camera adds to the cinematography too, and with a specific roughness that looks almost like the same camera used to film Whispering Corridors (another ESSENTIAL Korean horror film). I wish i could be in that sauna and just Vibe, worn camera and everything

Just a random sidenote: the DVD i watched this on is a Chinese Region-0 press and still had the Cat-3 Warning stickers on the case!!! I kept them because the Cat-3 Warning Label is so sick it’s like the Parental Advisory sticker on all those good music albums with swears and shit lmao
