Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2018

Despite the huge hype and the universal love and praise the film gets as not only one of the best superhero, but also as one of the most creative and visually boundary-pushing animated films, I was only looking forward to it medium much cause superheroes and animation might very well be the two genres I’m least interested in. I don’t dislike them, Im just not particularly interested. Hence me not having seen this until now.

And what can I say, it is a good film. Very good, but it didn’t knock me out of my shoes. 

The animation is wonderful and I love how alive it feels and how much creativity is in it. The film looks super cool. That being said, I don’t love the animation as much as everyone else. It’s amazing, but not my favorite animation style. Personal preference, I guess.

The characters are super well written and really make you root for them. There were so many sweet and touching moments and some really got to me. The characters, how they are treated and how they tie in with the films message are one of the films biggest strengths. 

I don’t think the story is tho. While it certainly is well written, hits all the right beats and pulls the right strings, it feels rather conservative and not as boundary-pushing and amazingly creative as the art style and visuals. It definitely takes the back seat, but that’s fine. It works.

Don’t have much more to say, except that I didn’t like the soundtrack that much, but again, that’s just personal preference. Oh, and Gwen rules!

While I don’t love it as much as pretty much everyone else, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” deserves all the praise it gets. It might very well be that great and it certainly is that innovative and influential. I mean, it’s visual style has already had a huge impact on animation style with films like “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” very much looking like this one.

Looking forward to the sequel, which I expect to like kore than this one.
