I've maybe watched that opening scene a good five or some times, and every single time I would turn the film off because it was just so outrageously offputting for some reason. Thank god this film is kind of a polar opposite of that opening and a pretty fantastic subversion of what I thought it would be.
This film uses music perfectly, although I have to say pretty much every musical segment in this is easily the worst part of the movie. Thankfully, the majority of these scenes are used to show the absurdist nature of the genre. It constantly felt like it was taking the piss out of these scenes and contrasting it with the harsh reality.
A lot of the weight of this film comes out of the actor's performances. Both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone do a fantastic job, and they play off each other well. I do feel like the ending carried this film pretty hard. The last-minute of the film is where it truly stands out among the genre.
