Josh Felix’s review published on Letterboxd:
"The Nice Guys" - A Perfect Blend of Comedy and Action.
"And thus the greatest sequel never made", 'The Nice Guys' is a delightful throwback to the buddy-cop genre, infused with Shane Black’s signature humor and style. Set in the gritty yet vibrant 1970s Los Angeles, the film follows an unlikely partnership between Russell Crowe’s no-nonsense enforcer as Jackson Healy, and Ryan Gosling’s bumbling private investigator as Holland March. The chemistry between these two was fucking electric, with their contrasting personalities driving the comedy to perfection. Crowe’s stoic demeanor perfectly balances Gosling’s chaotic energy, creating moments of hilarity that feel natural and refreshing.
The film’s screenplay is razor-sharp, with snappy dialogue and clever twists that keep the narrative engaging. Beyond the comedy, "The Nice Guys" succeeds as a thrilling detective story, brimming with quirky characters and an intriguing mystery. The retro aesthetic, combined with a lively soundtrack, further enhances the nostalgic appeal.
Even though it is critically acclaimed, the film remains an underrated gem that absolutely deserves a sequel. The dynamic between Crowe and Gosling offers endless potential for new adventures, and it’s rare to find a film that blends humor, action, and heart so seamlessly. "The Nice Guys" is a joyride that leaves you wishing for more, cementing its place as a modern classic in the genre.
