In 1977 Los Angeles, private investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) is hired to search for a recently deceased adult movie star when her aunt becomes convinced she's still alive. This leads March to Amelia Kuttner (Margaret Qualley), who then pays enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) to dissuade March from following her. The Nice Guys is an action comedy film co-written and directed by Shane Black.
This movie puts you in a good mood right from the start, with those very first bass beats during the opening credits. Then comes an intriguing opening, the great 1970s setting, catchy songs, and finally, Gosling and Crowe.
Black's movie has a great cast, which also includes Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger, Lois Smith and Keith David. It's pure joy to watch Gosling and Crowe bicker, and they should do much more movies together. However, there's also 14-year-old Rice (in one of her earliest roles), and she's a scene-stealer.
The script of The Nice Guys is sharp, smart and witty, it combines black comedy, buddy cop movie, action film and neo noir for a very intriguing mix, in which one hilarious scene and darkly funny turn follows the other. It also beautifully recreates 1970s Los Angeles with excellent production design.
In conclusion, The Nice Guys is a hilarious, smooth, somewhat raunchy 1970s action comedy, action-packed and thoroughly entertaining, with a great cast.
I added the movie to my Liked Films - the movies I enjoy the most, regardless of their rating, and could watch again and again.
