I'm conflicted about Longlegs. It's a technically perfect film, with no flaws beyond not meeting my expectations. I anticipated something far more terrifying, despite avoiding most of the marketing.
The film excels in all areas: pacing, performances, score/sound design, and cinematography. Yet, it feels uninspired, lacking a certain je ne sais quoi?! Nicolas Cage was fantastic in his role, with the filmmakers wisely avoiding overexposing him. Maika Monroe, though great, wasn't given enough material to truly shine due to a lackluster script.
There’s an unusual sprinkle of comic relief throughout, which, though genuinely funny, felt out of place. I wanted to be scared, to feel a sense of impending doom. It just felt very predictable...but it looks like ill be in the minority on this one. In the end, I'm left wondering: can a film ever truly scare me again?
