simply perfect, and as a resistance film it’s close to a miracle. a triumvirate of filmmaker, leading man and lady at the peak of their velocity. when biographer scott eyman asked ernst’s niece which of his films was most about him she responded “the shop around the corner; it contains the most of what he was, all the types, the people that were his friends, the people he loved".

lenny was a genuine shooting star. out of all i've seen of his work this tracks most with what i've read from him. unhinged, and allowing no space for the middle to impact the low and high.
in the wonderful book "radical light: alternative film and video in the san francisco bay area, 1945-2000" there is a reprint of a letter lenny wrote to p adams sitney after he took issue with a rather dismissive piece written in the voice.…
