Pro: Peter Dinklage got to play the romantic lead and a character where his height was never mentioned
Cons: literally everything else
This is just an absolutely bizarre movie, one where character motivations are almost totally incomprehensible (Anne Hathaway's plot is insane!), plot points are introduced and dropped at random, and nothing matters. It's a spectacular misfire, one where almost every single creative decision is the wrong one, but that almost makes it watchable, sort of like how you can't look away from a car crash.
My main takeaway here is that Dave Chapelle has a giant ego. At one point he compares himself to LeBron James and Eddie as Michael Jordan. But you can't say that kind of thing about yourself! At least Eddie has the wherewithal to a least make himself appear humble, though I highly doubt that's actually the case.
Shih-Ching Tsou has been with Sean Baker since the beginning, and now he's using his clout to help her get her own movie made, acting as writer and producer (they had previously co-directed Take Out together but this is her solo debut). It's a pretty typical coming of age movie set in Tapei, focusing on a mother and her two daughters as they navigate difficult circumstances. It gets a bit wild and soap opera-y at certain points but it's a strong film. And the kid is adorable.
