Overflowing with vibrancy; meta-heavy; emotionally immersive coming-of-age adventure.
For a film with a hefty premise it does a great job of carrying and unpacking all the weight without disorienting the audience from the central character and his story, and does so against an amazing soundtrack.
The central idea, that anybody can be Spider-Man, and the basis for Miles’ inception, is showcased so engagingly. From the cultural nuances of Miles’ Afro-Latino background as hip-hop head from Brooklyn who enjoys eating from the pot and wears his Jordan 1s untied to the surreal animation that’s translated the comic book style onto screen (they showed off with this one 😭; crazy work).
This definitely feels like a new chapter in animation, and filmmaking at large. The retro look of four-colour process printing (CMYK) that’s applied to the 3D animation vitalises the feeling of reading a comic into a sensational visual experience — the detail in some of the sequences is mesmerising. What a time to be alive!
The aesthetic experiment payed off; not only has it managed to rejuvenate the franchise, it’s presented itself as an opportunity for countless stories.
