I am not someone who has watched a lot of musicals but what few I have watched, I have enjoyed. I can see the appeal with this film as it celebrates the different components of the entertainment industry. We see the comparisons and contrasts between musicians and actors including the highs and lows each realm can bring. I loved the introduction of jazz and the musician who was passionate about his music, balanced with the struggles of a screenwriter attempting to make it as an actor.
While there are dancing musical numbers, the entirety of the film isn't structured around nonstop musicals which I appreciate. The dance and musical numbers are distributed within the film to give just enough room for the narrative to breathe. While there is a lot of nostalgia within the story, there is still a modern vibe that is presented.
It was an enjoyable ride that didn't take the common choice used to conclude a film like this for both of the main characters. It isn't completely unexpected but it doesn't force a happily ever after motif either. I can see why this film was considered for so many awards.
