A aging wildfire of a film, consuming all in its path, The Wild Bunch feels like a separate genre from its predecessors with its pulsating violence and unquestionably evil characters. That makes it all the more sophisticated and compelling that we, as an audience, are compelled to sympathize and even root for them. There’s no heroes and villains, just gunmen getting by, who may in the end hold true to a code after all. Pretty clearly a massive influence not only on the genre going forward, but media in general. I’m especially reminded of Red Dead Redemption.
The binocular shots are awesome. Zoom ins as well, clever focusing and memorable characters. Jaime Sánchez in particular. Angel’s torture being the spark that lights the gangs humanity is touching.
We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all..
