“Wild Bunch” did the Western genre so wonderfully dirty that it spawned a generation of successors that tried and failed to equal its carnage and depravity.
There were revisionist Westerns before “Wild Bunch,” but for the most part, they were somber, anti-hero narratives. Then, “Wild Bunch” came in shooting. And shooting. And shooting. And Westerns would never be the same.
“Wild Bunch” sacrifices any deep character development for its lengthy action sequences. But what action sequences they are. Littered with blood, bodies and slo-mo, they make the Mexican heat look cool to this very day.
