This rules. Balances a very careful tightrope as the plot gets more and more intricate and convoluted, but it still manages to be clear and above the fray of confusion. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall are perfect. The way Humphrey gets the drop on Eddie Mars in the final confrontation, and how Eddie meets his end, is so goddamn satisfying. Perfect noir, everything is slick and controlled, when I think of mystery, crime, and the golden age of Hollywood some of my first thought will likely be of The Big Sleep. As I watched I was reminded of tropes and wordplay that have endured in other media (L.A Noire), other films from my childhood that so clearly are reverent of this.
Really fun film, a real blast to see pieces fall into place, positions be upturned, situations be done, and methodically undone. This is the stuff that archetypes are made of.
