Great movie for those of us who like to use pen and paper to keep track of what's happening.
also goes by its subtitle: "Or Los Angeles is populated by scores of ridiculously beautiful women in everyday jobs like librarians, rare booksellers, cab drivers, coat-check girls, and cigarette girls that ALL want to fuck the shit out of Humphrey Bogart for some reason."
At no point did I have even the slightest idea what was going on. 4 stars

The second film to feature Raymond Chandler's hard boiled detective Philip Marlowe in less then two years, but usually the one that's remembered as Marlowe's earliest incarnation. The first film, Murder, My Sweet, is actually a very good film, but director Edward Dmytryk and star Dick Powell are simply no match for Big Sleep's Howard Hawks and Humphrey Bogart.
Hawks and his screenwriters crafted a film where the dialogue is almost a bigger star then Bogart himself. The give and take between Bogey and everyone in the film is so good that the film is considered a masterpiece even though the plot is so convoluted that if you analyze it too much…
If anyone ever sees anything sexier than Bogart and Bacall sitting in a bar, drinking, smoking and talking, please let me know and I will send you five dollars.

As a diehard film noir guy, I’ve always had issue with The Big Sleep. Despite Chandler’s appreciation of Bogart’s performance, it hardly feels like his writing—Can you imagine Bogart’s Marlowe saying the following passage? “I looked down at the chessboard. The move with the knight was wrong. I put it back where I had moved it from. Knights had no meaning in this game. It wasn’t a game for knights.” That’s something Mitchum could nail – and does in Farewell, My Lovely. And if we’re gonna put this next to Tourneur or even Wilder, it’s visually bland in terms of its lighting (not necessarily a bad thing).

hawks understands more than anyone that the plot of a film doesn't matter, so keep it nonsensical; that the emotions of a film do matter, so keep them volcanic

one of the ultimate 'i have no idea what happens in the story, but the vibes are impeccable' films. bogie and bacall's romance is a cinematic gift; we need more movies that don't explain themselves to the audience, more movies that are willfully obscure and obtuse. there's a filthy mysticism to the big sleep that i find intensely compelling.
