The Rover 2014
“There is no shade in David Michôd’s Australian neo-western The Rover, the sun having burned away whatever forces once held this world together. Beneath this eye of fire, men with guns and vendettas roam the lawless land. Released in 2014 alongside a political climate of hopeful status quo and superhero industrial complex domination, the film follows two men on a simple quest to retrieve a stolen car. Their path leads to the violent, tragic endpoint that is rugged individualism masculinity.…

Baseball 1994
Bear with me here, this is about time.
I recently finished reading Moby Dick (I promise to make this intro into more than just a brag), one of the “great American novels” by many of those who try to quantify such things; I will say that the final 100 pages are truly something special, all blood, lightning, and ocean wrath, ending on more-than-justified actions committed by Mr. Dick. While personally the majority of the middle didn’t do much for me,…

The Wild Robot 2024
As someone whose ideal aesthetics are “robot attuned to nature” I really have no clue why I didn’t catch this in theaters. Probably would have hit harder then. Watching both this and Flow (this would have been a 5 star flick if it had been pop song and dialogue free as well, though Matt Berry could stick around) within a week is like being caught in the middle of two dropkicks. Love those nihilistic possum babies.

Emilia Pérez 2024
Now there’s no way I’m seeing this but speaking as a basic straight white guy it is very much a canary in the coal mines that the only people I’ve seen liking this are basic straight white guys. Really I’m just here to gripe that this got an Oscar nom for Sound and not Furiosa which is gonna be my most zero stakes stuck popcorn kernel for a good while.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 2024
You can feel the studio execs chasing after Mad Man Miller, a war party unto themselves. “Reduce your shooting on-location, embrace CGI, here’s your checklist of Fury Road references,” they demand. Miller seems to have agreed only to promptly grab the stack of studio cash on the table before speeding off towards the horizon. This is a guzzolene-soaked Moby Dick by way of Frank Frazette, of an epic scale inversely proportional to the to-the-bone leanness of Fury Road. It all…

Blue Velvet 1986
“Perhaps that is what ‘Lynchian’ should come to define, more than any liminal space or absurd abstraction. In all things, a balance, that though beauty and love will never be unscathed, they are nevertheless indestructible.”
Started a Patreon and for my first post I tried to put into words what Blue Velvet means to me.
