Barry Daulton’s review published on Letterboxd:
A really good follow up to the 1988 cult classic. Are we seeing a trend now of these long awaited sequels actually being good? This is still in the minority, but it's promising that filmmakers are now actually finding good reasons to come back to old work rather than for just a paycheck. While there are lots of little morsels for fans of the original to enjoy, it doesn't go in hard of the fan service. Ortega is a great cast choice and continues to show why she is such a rising star.
After the Original and Home Alone, I would've listed O'Hara as one of my least favorite parts of both movies. After exposure to her work on SCTV, the films of Christopher Guest, and most recently Schitts Creek, I am a fan and she is incredibly funny in this. Revisiting Delia all these years later and adding so much of her natural comedic timing made her one of my most favorite parts.
Obviously a vehicle for Keaton who plays the role perfectly in line with the first film and Ryder is always great. Most all of this is exactly what I wanted and expected going in, no disappointment there. The absence of Jones is explained away well, I could've used less shots of his likeness or honestly just less of his character as reminder. Speaking of less, my one major complaint is that there is just too much going on. On top of the 4 main roles I have commended, you got Theroux, Bellucci, and Dafoe with nearly as much screen time. Not that any of them weren't terrific, but the film could have easily done away with the time spent on any one of those 4 characters and it would've tighten the film up perfectly. Honestly I'd prefer to see less Charles Deetz because of Jones, but really to me no matter how you slice it. In its current state there are just too many different plots going on to give the movie all the room needed to breathe properly.
Still its really good and I liked it a lot. A truly worthy sequel to a movie I've loved and seen many times over the years.
