When they started arguing over the morality of the death penalty, every part of my body was screaming "THIS IS FUCKING GOOD!" Highly recommend. If it had a score to up the already excellent suspense, it would be a 10/10.

"The Public Enemy" is one of those special movies which are TOO short. Intertwining the romantic subplots more seamlessly with the main story would've extended the run time a bit, but would've also had made a more engaging film all around. What we got was satisfying enough, but I can only imagine the juiciness a potential rewrite might've given us.

It feels like there's this strong anti-prison establishment message in the beginning of the movie, but by the end it's preaching the complete opposite. If they kept going with the former it could've been so much better.

While I don't blame anyone for judging this movie because of the blackface (it made me cringe so hard), as a narrative it works really well. Al Jolson has a great voice and fits the role perfectly.

I love how this movie is able to have two different protagonists with two opposing goals and make you root for both of them. Frank is a bit of a womanizer, but you can’t help but want for him and Brenda to settle down together.

Great effects, great story, great characters. The only thing holding it back from being a true masterpiece is the fact that most of the third act is pretty predictable. To be fair though the predictable bits are still really good.
