Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not only one of the greatest animated movies of all time, it's simply one of the best films ever made. With it's maximalist approach to the ethos of this spider hero, that has enraptured and inspired whole generations, this film tackles all of that history in a display of cinematic perfection.
It is clear from the word go that everyone working on this picture has a deep appreciation for the character of Spider-Man. This dude has such a distinct personality and set of morals that the filmmakers clearly understand and respect. Using decades of content and the plethora of Spider-Man media to inspire their decisions makes each Spider-character in this story feel genuinely real. Not only in the sense that I identify with their struggles or can easily be rooting for them while watching, but they are so real in the sense that these versions of the characters feel like the most authentic they could possibly be.
Assembling a mega all star cast was the first sign that Sony wasn't messing around here. Coming in to voice the web-slinger is Jake Johnson, Chris Pine, Nicolas Cage, Hailee Steinfeld, John Mulaney, and in a career-defining performance, we got Shameik Moore as Miles Morales. Other voices procured for the film include Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Zoë Kravitz, and Kathryn Hahn. It is absolutely bananas how many great actors were cast in this and that they also fully delivered in their respective booths, because we know not all A-list celebrities are up to the job of being a voice actor.
It is truly incredible how well every aspect of this project meshes together. The writing is very on brand, with plenty of character appropriate quips, and lots of laughs to be had; the voice acting is remarkable across the board; the soundtrack is the perfect blend of original tracks and contemporary artists adding their own flavor; and great heavens the animation is unlike anything else done before. Sony hired more animators for this film than any other, and they literally had to invent new animating techniques to achieve the style they envisioned. It is the perfect blend of computer graphics, hand drawn elements, and special effects. They sought to re-create the feeling of a comic book for the movie, and they succeeded magnificently. It truly feels like you've been sucked into a comic book.
Into the Spider-Verse left an indelible mark on the industry, with it leading to a resurgence of creative and unique animated films. It is also the greatest comic book movie ever made, the best Spider-Man movie ever made, and quite possibly the best superhero movie ever made. Those bastards really hit the trifecta. Oh yeah, it also has what is without a doubt the best post-credit scene of any movie ever. The sequel has been getting near universal praise from all the lucky folks who got to see it yesterday. I honestly didn't expect to have a follow up masterpiece, but if that's what we get, then maybe this isn't the darkest timeline.
