Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a dark fantasy comedy horror film. The film is a sequel to Beetlejuice (1988) and the second film of the Beetlejuice franchise. The film focuses on three generations of the Deetz family returns home to Winter River after an unexpected family tragedy. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life soon gets turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. When someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times, the mischievous demon gleefully returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem. The film stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, and Willem Dafoe.
The film’s exceptional ensemble cast led by the returning Keaton all gives wild, hilarious, poignant, thrilling performances. O’Hara, Ortega, and Ryder are standouts in the film. The screenplay brings back those original elements that made the initial film beloved but expands on Beetlejuice’s origins in a remarkable way, the villain is rather weak but still enjoyable. The practical effects are well-done. The cinematography and score is beautiful. I was genuinely surprised with how much stuff that Burton was able to get away with the PG-13 rating. I know modern Burton hasn’t exactly been a hit over the years but he cooked up a great legacy sequel with this film. Easily one of my favorite films of the year! It’s so much fun while packing so much heart into it.
