I was planning to watch this a little earlier and now it’s like 3 in the morning and I’m tired, soooooooooo yes, this was a crazy film to even watch this late and I am like so tired so I’ll try my best to get my full thoughts on this! I’ve wanted to watch I this for a while now and I finally got the chance thankfully to add on my 2024 films!
This hugely surprised me, I had heard great things, I heard this was a horror film and I was pretty curious and wanted to check it out. And wow, this was something completely different than I thought it would be. But I really liked it! The first and second acts of this film are the best parts, it establishes the problem, the character, and really goes around the idea of being perfect and addiction. I thought that part of the film was great and loved how it explored that. I guess it’s not really a part and more or so the overall message and theme of the film, but anyways. The whole Substance thing was so odd, but I liked the idea of it, it was cool and I liked how it started to show those effects and those results if you abused the use.
Now, in the third act, this is where I found the horror part of the film. I was really questioning how this film was horror and saw a few elements here and there, until the third act came along and holy shit. Wow. That was my favorite thing of the third act, except the third act was also my least favorite. I loved the horror elements, but I feel that around here is where the story lost its pace, where it loses its ground and it kinda fumbles the ending a bit. I liked the ending scene, I did like that but towards the ending was a bit eh. Yes it was insane but I feel like it lost its ground in the third act which was sad for me because I was loving this film.
Overall though, a great 2024 film, one of my favorites of the year honestly, and that’s coming from a guy btw, like I’ve heard men wouldn’t like this film because it doesn’t “reach out to them” or something like that but I really liked it. Not my words I’ve seen that claim though, don’t sue me please. But a great horror film, a great 2024 film, and overall something so insane to watch and write a review for at 3 in the morning. Goodnight yall! 🫡
