It was years since I'd seen it. I remembered all the great fighting, but what I'd forgotten was just how damn big Bruce's shirt collars are. Yikes!

  • Alien Nation

    Alien Nation

    ★★★

Every buddy-cop cliche you can possibly imagine crammed into 90 minutes. Plus aliens. Features a suitably grizzled James Caan and everyone's favourite man-with-a-lady's-name Mandy Patinkin. What's not to like?

  • It's a Wonderful Life

    It's a Wonderful Life

    ★★★★★

You know all those people who say it is one of the greatest films of all time? They're right. If you don't like it, you have carpet on your heart.

  • Jailhouse Rock

    Jailhouse Rock

    ★★★

As far as Elvis movies go, it's one of the better ones. His character is a right old grump though.

  • True Grit

    True Grit

    ★★★★

Glen Campbell is wooden, Kim Darby is a bit annoying, but none of that really matters when you've got John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. And the scenery ain't bad either.

  • Bloodsport

    Bloodsport

    ★★★★

Depending on which of the two types of martial arts movie plot you prefer (fighting your way through a tournament to avenge the death/injury of your friend/relative or learning a new martial arts technique from an old master to avenge the death/injury of your friend/relative) then either this or Kickboxer is Van Damme's best film. Although he should have won two best actor Oscars for Double Impact, obviously.

  • Ator, the Fighting Eagle

    Ator, the Fighting Eagle

    ½

A video shop classic from my youth. Ator is so bad, it should be giving me stars for watching it, not the other way around.

  • Mountaintop Motel Massacre

    Mountaintop Motel Massacre

    ★★★

Slow-building and creepy low budget slasher from the 80s. Features a granny with a sickle, and you can't say that about every movie.

  • Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India

    ★★★★

Hugely enjoyable Oscar-nominated Bollywood smash hit. Good introduction to Bollywood cinema if it's not something you've ever dabbled in. The Indian (good guys) and English (bad guys) cast obviously thoroughly enjoyed themselves and Paul Blackthorne steals every scene he's in as our hero Aamir Khan's nemesis Capt Russell.
The DVD release is taken off a shockingly scratched print, which only adds to he charm. Yes, it is a 3hrs 45mins cricket movie but honestly, don't let that put you off!

  • Oldboy

    Oldboy

    ★★★★

As long as Spike Lee does it EXACTLY THE SAME I'm sure the remake will be just fine. No idea of Spike's views on octopus munching. Everything you've heard about Oldboy is probably true, as long as those things are good things. Looks amazing, brutal violence, beautifully acted and a cracking twist.

  • Rope

    Rope

    ★★★½

Small-scale, dialogue-focused stage play adaptation from that Hitchcock fella, who has everything wrapped up in a refreshing 80 minutes.

  • Dawn of the Dead

    Dawn of the Dead

    ★★★½

I have a dog. He loves going for walks - it's his favourite thing to do. So if I ever find myself on a lovely country stroll without the dog, I feel guilt and shame. That guilt and shame is the same as I felt when I enjoyed the Dawn of the Dead remake. OH GOD I'M SORRY GEORGE.
