It's obviously my fault for not seeing the first one before seeing this, so a lot of my "issues" with this film during the first half may just come from a lack of context, but the film itself is a lot of fun once things are allowed to start getting wacky and silly!
I wouldn't say the plot is anything particularly worth resurrecting a 40 year old film over, but Tim Burton & co. are clearly so comfortable in this universe and are having a ton of creative fun with it all, so it's still an enjoyable experience.
Monica Bellucci's antagonist does come off as such an afterthought though, barely having anything to do with the ongoing narrative and comits the ultimate "villain sin" of only getting to interact with the main characters for mere minutes before being killed off rather quickly.
Absolutely loved the musical number finale 🎵 and the Soul Train stuff. Would have loved the film to have kept up that wacky inventiveness.
It's also crazy seeing a film in the cinema these days with this type of highly saturated and silly kids 90's/00's movies vibes (à la Casper, Power Rangers, Batman & Robin and the live action Scooby Doo), just having fun with it all!
