Luke Williams’s review published on Letterboxd:
Oh, what a day. What a lovely day!
Having finished my Godzilla marathon, I just didn't know what to watch next! So, I thought about the trailers I saw before Godzilla x Kong. The only one that looked even remotely interesting was Furiosa, so I thought, why not rewatch Mad Max: Fury Road? That turned out to be a pretty good decision, because I had a lot of fun revisiting this. Mad Max: Fury Road is pretty much all action, but that doesn't mean it isn't thought-provoking. This is one of the most fascinating post-apocalyptic worlds I have seen, and the ideas presented here are strangely compelling. This world is nearly dead, but everyone still manages to find something worth fighting for.
I love all of the characters in this movie. Max is the main character, and Tom Hardy is good in the role, but my favorite character remains Furiosa. Her quest for redemption sets the events of the film in motion, and I'm pretty excited to see what the prequel film adds to her story. The theme of redemption is present throughout the film. Max redeems himself somewhat by helping Furiosa. The redemption arc of Nux really resonated with me on this viewing. You can't control the system you are born into, but you can control the decisions you make in life. The connection Nux forms with Capable is really sweet, and his self-sacrifice is a good moment.
The action scenes in Fury Road remain a joy to watch. There is so much creativity on display here that it's hard not to appreciate the effort that went into it. There's a lot of stuff that seems random, but you just roll with it, because it looks cool. For example, there's one guy whose job is, apparently, to play the guitar nonstop for the duration of the chase. Why is this? Who knows, but it sure looks neat! Coincidentally, this has the same composer as Godzilla x Kong. I thought the music was great, really complementing the action. Mad Max: Fury Road is a blast to watch, and I'm sure I'll revisit many more times in my life.
Anyway, I saw that Godzilla x Kong got the biggest box office opening of the year so far. That's wonderful news! It's a glorious time to be a Godzilla fan. I hope this means the Monsterverse will continue!
Witness me.
