Cuban Pete’s review published on Letterboxd:
Ol' Timmy has still got it. He helped bring goth culture to the mainstream and I couldn't be happier about it. There was an old couple beside me in the theater laughing a lot and having a great time. These two looked pretty normal otherwise, too! I guess it HAS been 36 years since the original Beetlejuice, but I don't want to think about that. So even old people (like me at 37) can enjoy the ghost with the most.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice gets some things very right. The journey through the town's model as the opening credits roll out sets the mood perfectly, while also serving as one of many callbacks. Things like Delores' reanimation and the sand worms look as practical and goofy as possible. There's also a wedding scene that is absolutely the highlight for me, even if it goes on a bit too long. Best of all, the gang is back together. Most of the original's main cast returns along with Burton and Danny Elfman, and it's nice to see they haven't lost their touch.
But there's problems, see. In addition to the returning cast, several new characters get introduced, spawning multiple plot lines. This makes the movie suffer a bit from sequelitis, wherein too many things are happening alongside the main story and the whole thing feels a bit bloated. Willem Dafoe plays one of these new characters, and as much as I love him, he's miscast here.
This is still a good time overall, though. Filled to the brim with disgusting fun, it's perhaps one of the hardest PG-13s I've ever seen. I don't know how they got away with some of this stuff without being slapped with an R. I guess blood and guts isn't intense when it's played for laughs. Come prepared to see a healthy dose of that, the trademark twisted humor, and a few sing-along moments sure to bring a smile to your face. The Juice is loose, so you should be too.
