In terms of how it holds up as a sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a huge mess. Multiple sub-plots, cliché mother-daughter drama, and way too much build-up. All these issues stack up to create pretty much the ultimate legacy sequel. You know how I feel about this. We're going through the "comfort food" era, where people only want something familiar because it's safe and consistently above average. For those of us in the minority, it's generally exhausting and rarely rewarding. And yet, I had fun?
What the plot lacks is made up for in the Tim Burton department. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is packed with charm, style, and humor. Everything you've craved from a Tim Burton film is here, cranked up to eleven. It has the classic opening sequence with the town model, loaded with wild practical effects and the sandworms are back! Michael Keaton absolutely carries the film this time around, but seeing the gang back together was also a delight, even if their characters' dilemmas get a little exhausting at times. With all that being said, the real treat for me was hearing the audience burst out laughing and quietly pointing things out whenever Beetlejuice was on screen. It’s one of the few benefits we get when a sequel comes around thirty-seven years later.
It kind of reminds me of the Dial of Destiny experience. Another film that's far from good, but I got the chance to be around a variety of ages, some who clearly saw Raiders of the Lost Ark forty-three years ago, and it really added to the experience of seeing it in a theater. I'm not trying to use this as an excuse for the lack of criticism because yeah, I really can't imagine enjoying it as much if I'd watched it by myself. But, I don't know, for a one-off, it's fun.
