Remarkable. Gorgeously animated and armed with a story with so much heart and emotion that you will likely have to fight off tears on multiple occasions, The Wild Robot is a great film. Directed by Chris Sanders and featuring a slew of great vocal performances - highlighted by Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Bill Nighy, and Kit Connor - the film tells the story of a robot, Rozzum Unit 7134 aka “Roz” (Nyong’o), that due to a typhoon, has washed up on an island inhabited only by animals. There, she struggles to adapt until she learns their language and accidentally stumbles into a goose nest, witnessing the birth of a small gosling who she will later name Brightbill (Connor). With the help of a sly fox, Fink (Pascal), and eventually the wisdom of an elder goose, Longneck (Nighy), Roz becomes a mother to young Brightbill. This colorful, heartfelt, and impassioned story is an ode to parents, but also to community, stretching from those who fit and those who do not, at first, seem to fit but all come together to make a place “home”. There are so many moments that pull at the heartstrings with The Wild Robot sticking the landing repeatedly, never feeling too manipulative or saccharine as it makes one fall in love with the story of a robot, a goose, and a whole slew of animals.
Has anyone else seen AppleTV's show Sunny? There's an episode with a robot raising a bird (does not go as well, sorry). 2024 is apparently the year of robots raising birds.
