When Dreamworks nails it. They nail it. I quite enjoyed this film. The animation was great and unique with the almost paint brush-esque backgrounds. It had good themes of motherhood and family that were quite strong and is elevated by such an emotional and epic score. My god, the “I could use a boost” track on the album just gutted me. The voice work is great with Lupita Nyong’o as the robot and Pedro Pascal really impressed me as the fox. What I liked most was that the film was not afraid to get dark. There were some mature jokes as well that honestly made me full on cackle.
The villain they introduced right at the end felt a little tacked on. With not much investment in it. I knew it was going to happen, the environmentalism/industrialism themes were strong here but the story was so contained until then that it felt a little out of place. Overall though, this was quite a good film that I absolutely recommend for anyone to enjoy.
