I can’t decide if I’m an Emilia Perez hater or an Emilia Perez defender.
Do I think this is a realist, humane, or accurate depiction of either the trans experience or Mexico? Hell no. And I think it’s a completely fair critique to say this film is disinterested in both except for as instruments of melodrama. And yes, because of this, it veers into the kind of offensive territory that only the French are capable of.
