I had low expectations for this, given the state of nostalgia sequels over the last few years. But Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is actually entertaining, if overstuffed. Now-TV-ghost hunter Winona Ryder finds herself back in Winter River after the death of her grandfather, and tries to navigate issues with dramatic stepmom Catherine O’Hara, angry daughter Jenna Ortega, and overly feely manager/fiancé Justin Theroux - while avoiding you-know-who getting summoned again from the model town in the attic.
That only scratches the surface of the many subplots going on here, which are either edited down or never amounted to much to begin with. But plot doesn’t really matter here - it’s about the performances and the setpieces, and the cast is very good, especially Theroux. For much of the film the Beetlejuice storyline is the least interesting one, but Keaton gets to run with it late and have fun.
And like the Handbook for the Recently Deceased says, no movie can be bad that has a literal Soul Train, a big finale set to “MacArthur Park”, and Monica Bellucci for almost no reason except to make it better by appearing ;)
