My favorite Kevin Smith movie so far. I think as of now, it’s his most mature and well made film that I’ve seen so far. It’s dated in a few aspects, that’s expected but I think it’s mainly an anti-label film. I found it to be a nice movie about love and a story about how all humans want connection in some way and the need for importance in that connection in someone’s life that you care about. Along with good drama, I found it to be pretty funny as well. Based on Silent Bob’s speech toward the end, it seems like this story really comes from a place or familiarity. I like Ben Affleck and Joey Lauren Adams as these characters. I like these sort of hangout films and that’s pretty much what Smith is known for.
Ending was weird, I feel like Affleck’s character development happened offscreen. Just seemed like the movie knew how to end but didn’t know how to get there. Overall, I would recommend this, I kind of wish Smith would’ve done more of these laidback dramas instead of sticking to comedy, I think he blended the genres well to make a very good film. Also come on, the scene comparing sex related scars in the manner of the Jaws scars scene is the kind of stuff that just make his movies fun sometimes.
