A true delight except for the old couple next to me adding unnecessary commentary throughout like "that's nosferatu" and "he had sex with her!", not to mention the older guy's breathing sounding exactly like Count Orlok, sometimes confusing whether he was in the scene or sitting 2 seats down from me.

Eggers' atmospheric sensibilities feel just right in his adaptation. Hard to say if there was a moment where the suffocating tension broke for me yet the neck ripping and…

Undeniably, painfully centrist in many ways, very hit or miss from a musical standpoint and the bow on top of it all is a random Tel Aviv jumpscare but I'm afraid to say I was grinning from ear to ear for most of this. Took me back to visiting my grandparents and tuning in and out of a telenovela playing on TV Chile and the massive lapse in plot that would occur in the span of 10-20 mins. Delightfully cunty, big ups Gascón and Saldana. My hope in Saint Laurent Productions is restored once again!

There's still no one doing it like Kaufman. Maybe not up there as a top 4 anymore but Brion's score for this one is still an all-timer for me 🫶

don't hmu, pondering on the great falsehood that is the american dream and the inescapable reality of class structures designed to keep us where we are and that even a potential out in the form of a fairy tale story isnt enough to liberate us from this struggle but as long as a slayyter song plays in a film reminding me of this i will smile and clap like an ape because we come to this place for magic, to laugh, to cry, to care, etc.  💔

"All he wanted to do was... sleep. And for the first time, he wished he were far away. Lost in a deep, vast country where nobody knew him. Somewhere without language, or streets. He dreamed about this place without knowing its name."

Been trying to find the right words for this one but all I can say is this is a new forever favourite and everything my heart needed. Fuck I love movies so much 😭

Maybe the most vulnerable work I've had the pleasure of seeing this year and one which pours its soul in to every frame of its being. The rain scene might just be my favourite of the year, a pure display of liberation from the euphoria one gets when your work is loved and a show of what it means to inspire someone. The most life-affirming film I've seen in a while and one that has rekindled the creative spirit in…

    Mala Noche

    ★★½

Kinda terrible but also loved it? Very glad Van Sant never attempted to explore race and diaspora because it's easily the worst handled element of the film. In retrospect, I think it makes for a fascinating watch to view Walt's very predatory obsession with Johnny, Roberto and Mexican culture as not just predatory but also blindly romantic and ignorant despite his best efforts to understand. Beyond that there's moments of some genuinely terrible acting, horrible lighting choices (in tandem with…

Maybe the most haunting thing ill watch all halloween season, sometimes I struggle with the abundance of queer tragedy stories there are in fiction and its undeniable that this has grown a reputation as a poster child of the sub-genre. This rewatch I couldn't help but notice the forces at play in this story, the cruel, relentless natural world, unforgiving time that sees years disappear from one cut to the next, Ennis' tortured mind and how much it resents his…
