The Boy and the Heron 2023
Maybe too early to call but think this might be my favourite Miyazaki film.
Years of trial, error, pain and growth culminate in to Miyazaki's (potentially final) victory lap. There are touches of many of his previous works, with some on-the-nose nods and more subtle thematic connections yet the film is at its most interesting in how they are portrayed at this particular point in his career. Many have pointed it out but 'How Do You Live?' truly does feel…

Dune: Part Two 2024
Prior to the 28th of February I truly was not a Dune believer. Every passing day, Part One soured on me more and more to the point where I truly was a hater, in my mind it could never beat the "half a movie" allegations but for almost 3 years ive held on to a glimmer of hope that seeing both films would finally make it make sense. Maybe it's the IMAX bias, maybe its insane amount of hype, perhaps…

Nosferatu 2024
A true delight except for the old couple next to me adding unnecessary commentary throughout like "that's nosferatu" and "he had sex with her!", not to mention the older guy's breathing sounding exactly like Count Orlok, sometimes confusing whether he was in the scene or sitting 2 seats down from me.
Eggers' atmospheric sensibilities feel just right in his adaptation. Hard to say if there was a moment where the suffocating tension broke for me yet the neck ripping and…

Emilia Pérez 2024
Undeniably, painfully centrist in many ways, very hit or miss from a musical standpoint and the bow on top of it all is a random Tel Aviv jumpscare but I'm afraid to say I was grinning from ear to ear for most of this. Took me back to visiting my grandparents and tuning in and out of a telenovela playing on TV Chile and the massive lapse in plot that would occur in the span of 10-20 mins. Delightfully cunty, big ups Gascón and Saldana. My hope in Saint Laurent Productions is restored once again!

I Used to Be Funny 2023
I really wanted to love this but unfortunately I cannot be bribed with Phoebe. While the supporting cast had standouts, I couldn't help but shake the B-grade TV movie acting feeling I was getting, especially with the boyfriend character, the father and his friends and that courtroom scene. While the film balanced it's trauma and comedy well, I don't think either were portrayed particularly great. I felt the humour was incredibly hit or miss and there were many moments where…

The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes 2022
"Anime was a mistake." - Hayao Miyazaki
definitely one of if not the worst theatre experience I've had. admittedly i booked this film out of morbid curiosity, the member's pre-sale had just opened for MIFF and this was maybe the first non-big event to be marked as selling fast. i was baffled, i thought "no way the average miff crowd was so eager for this". i thought this looked like a generic "mildly depressed boy meets cool and stoic girl…
