Probably the best thing to come out of not saying no to a senile multi-millionaire egomaniac. "Megalopolis" is everything you've heard and more, I cannot emphasise how singular this work of cinema is. The realisation of Coppola's decades of thoughts, feelings, visions and fears, the film tackles an insane checklist of themes and ideas all of which can be made in to their own film including Coppola's own Roman Empire, The Roman Empire. There is truly little to no rhyme or reason as to when or how these themes are tackled, only thing that remains consistent is the chaos.
A perfectly casted film (despite the not-so perfect people on board for it), everyone is truly committed to the bit despite the obvious confusion looming over the cast, crew and now audiences. Simultaneously one of the most beautiful and ugliest films I've ever seen, some incredible lighting and camera work that make the most out of the IMAX experience but also some delightfully dreadful CGI that add a layer of artificial charm to the film, fitting rather snug in to its themes.
Genuinely a one-of-a-kind viewing experience that I will forever cherish. I will never forget the stock snake charmer music that plays when Cesar wears a head scarf, Wow Platinum, the insanely insensitive archival footage and "What do you think about my boner?". Most fun I've had at the festival, the Palme d'Or winner of my heart.
