Hellraiser 1987
U.S. premiere of the 4K restoration at 62nd New York Film Festival… INTRODUCED BY ME
I told a story to our packed audience about growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness and being drawn to horror, despite my parents doing everything possible to keep me away from it. The intro went over beautifully and my ego was riding high for a week afterward.
When I watched Hellraiser earlier this year, I became obsessed. I’ve since watched all 11 movies. I dove…

The Farmer 1977
George Memmoli, who plays the mob boss in The Farmer, was supposed to be in Taxi Driver. Due to injuries that he received while shooting a car stunt in this film, he had to decline the role of 'Disturbed Passenger' which Scorsese himself filled. The irony of this comes from the fact that The Farmer played as the second half of a double-bill with Taxi Driver for nearly ten months. This "lost" film, unseen for over 40 years, wasn't actually…

Nosferatu 2024
The feelings this gave me are, I imagine, the same feelings people had watching the original back in 1922. Stunning visual terror with every new shot. The scene when the empty horse carriage approaches Thomas Hutter in the woods, gave me the goosebumps that I yearn for when watching horror movies. The best type of suspenseful scary that fills me with dread.
I'm seeing a lot of complaints that Egger's adaption "does nothing new" but liiiike we are talking about…

Christmas with the Kranks 2004
John Grisham's 2001 novel, Skipping Christmas, lacks any real suspense or drama. The characters exist in a stale, suburban world of pearly white smiles and Ralph Lauren placket sweaters. The people of Hemlock Street live their lives as a prudish cult that sneers at anyone outside of their bubble. Yet it's easily my favorite book I read this year. I loved every page. I laughed at every joke. I couldn’t get enough. It’s the mundane simplicity of it all that…

Bodies Bodies Bodies 2022
Pete Davidson verbally attacks Chase Sui Wonders early on in the film, saying she doesn't have an original thought in her head that wasn't "preordained" by someone on Twitter. Yet this movie, with all of it's tiktok language, doesn't have anything new to say with it's infuriating dialogue. Marcel The Shell, another recently released A24 film with a strong commentary about the current state of technology and social media, speaks in a succinct and poignant manner. With only a few…
