Some notes: - Terrible opening 20 minutes or so, easily the worst and most clunky part of the film - Feels very thematically disconnected with the original, given how they treat Lydia's parents and the absence of the original leads - Mixed feelings on the way they handled the Jeffrey Jones thing, but it could have been worse - Burton feels more invested and clearly has fun with the practical effects, but still kinda fails to replicate the live action cartoon manic feel of the original most of the time, but that may be the script getting in the way - What's the Wednesday writers obsession with making Jenna Ortega fall for bland twinks? - Pretty funny most of the time, with Keaton (who hasn't had this much fun in god knows how long), Dafoe and O'Hara standing out - I respect some of the attempts to be more dramatic but it feels very unsubtle and clearly aiming for a teen goth/emo demographic rather than authentic personal expression, the acting helps it though - Needledrops feel a little forced and more like an attempt to sell a soundtrack - I want Monica Bellucci to do that to me........ - Brad Pitt executive producer? - The stop motion is cool most of the time, sometimes forced and disconnected from the originals look but still decent - I do kinda wish they went more colourful, given the colour contrast between the subject matter and visuals is what makes the original so visually engaging - I hope Tim Burton continues to get his groove back but honestly I don't think he's ever going to have the balls to do something more personal under the studio system again
