Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

"Where is Beetlejuice?"

- (Reading time: 2 Minutes)

I finally got the chance to see it today, and at long last, the ghost with the most has made his grand return to the silver screen. Jumping back into the world of undead misfits, this film feels like catching up with an old friend who hasn't missed a beat. Tim Burton dives headfirst into his realm of gothic absurdity, delivering a spectacle that's every bit as chaotic and charming as you'd hope. This isn't just a revival; it's a wild celebration of the weird and wonderful—a film that dares to straddle the line between the familiar and the fresh, all while flashing a grin as wide as Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice.

Keaton once again embodies the unhinged spirit of the afterlife, straddling the line between manic chaos and endearing mischief. He's back, and this time, his screen presence is even more electric. Watching him is like witnessing a tornado in a bottle—wild, funny, and just the right amount of reckless. He commands the screen, twisting the film's strange energy into his own playground, proving that some characters never lose their spark, even decades later.

Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega shine as a mother-daughter duo, each bringing a touch of Burton's signature quirkiness. Ryder slips back into her role as Lydia seamlessly, her rapport with Keaton as sharp as ever. Ortega's presence adds a youthful edge, but it's her connection to her on-screen mother gives the film its unexpected heart. Their dynamic is a perfect blend of the old and new, grounding the film amid its whirlwind of gags and ghouls.

Visually, Burton doubles down on the bizarre, amplifying his original vision with updated effects that still carry the charm of the practical work from 1988. The sets burst with colour and detail, blending Burton's macabre aesthetics with a carnival-like vibrancy. Yet, there's a sense of restraint in the madness—where the original often felt like a chaotic sprint, this sequel occasionally takes a moment to breathe, letting the humour land without overwhelming.

However, not every element clicks perfectly into place. The story, with its tangled web of new characters and subplots, occasionally stumbles. Some new faces, like Willem Dafoe's kooky character, steal the show, while others struggle to find their footing. The script juggles too many threads, and though it captures the essence of what made the original a cult classic, it sometimes loses itself in the noise. But even with its narrative hiccups, the film's charm lies in its ability to embrace its flaws—much like its titular character.

This film isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; it's just here to have a good time. It's messy, it's loud, and it's proudly weird—a fitting return to the world that Burton built. Watching it feels like catching up with an old friend who's still delightfully offbeat, and while not every moment hits, the ones that do remind you why this world was worth revisiting. Even now, after 36 years, Beetlejuice's mischievous grin still beckons us to join the dance of the strange and unusual, and it's hard to resist the call.
